Patubas 2 Literary Anthology: A Call for Submissions

Ten years after the release of Patubas – An Anthology of West Visayan Literature, published by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and edited by Palanca Hall of Famer, Dr. Leoncio Deriada, the Capiz Council for Culture and the Arts (CCCA) headed by Bryan Mari Argos, through it’s literary division, Yanggaw Capiz Writers’ Group (YCWG), headed by Marcel Milliam will again take the initiative of instrumentalizing the publication of Patubas 2. Responding to the growth of the literary corpus in the region, Patubas 2, which will still be edited by Dr. Leoncio Deriada, will feature works from budding and established regional writers from the period of 1990 to the present.

The project coordinators hope to include in this volume a good sampling of pieces representative of the robust condition of literature in Region VI. The CCCA along with the YCWG invites all writers from Western Visayas, whether residing in the region or residing outside the region but are originally from Western Visayas to submit pieces in any language.

The pieces may be poetry, short fiction, non-fiction, drama (preferably one-act), excerpts from longer works like novels and full-length plays and screenplays, and should include translations for non-English or Filipino pieces. Each writer is encouraged to submit 3-5 short pieces or 1-2 longer pieces (excluding translations for non-English/Filipino pieces) to allow the editor as well as the project coordinators to decide which pieces to include in the anthology. Submissions should also be accompanied by a 150-200-word narrative description of the author as well as a picture.

All submissions should be in .doc or .rtf format and should be sent as an email attachment to patubas2@gmail.com not later than July 15, 2009. Only submissions sent through email will be entertained.

The project, which will be entered as a proposal for the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) competitive grants program will hopefully see publication in 2010. For more information, please contact Bryan Mari Argos through cell phone number (63)920.9499622 or Marcel Milliam through cell phone number (63)918.9248460, or write to the email address indicated above. Virgin Labfest 5 blog contest: Win these prizes!

This is a call for submission from Gibbs Cadiz:

[Note: I was told by Gibbs that I cannot join this contest. (Sad!) :-(
Friends, please read the rules carefully so you could win these great prizes.]

There is no official Virgin Labfest blog contest this year (last year there was, organized by the Writers' Bloc and Tanghalang Pilipino), but this blog is putting one up--thanks to some office freebies I've been able to hoard for prizes.

The rules
1. Watch any or all of the plays featured in Virgin Labfest 5 and blog about them--in whatever way you choose. There are 6 main sets. You may write about only one set, or all of them; whether in English or Filipino, I don't particularly mind. No editorial input from me; your honest opinion is what counts. And though I'd be delighted to read one, I'm not expecting a formal review. (See our earlier Cinderella contest for reference, and a roundup of last year's Virgin Labfest 4 Blogfest winners if you need pegs for your own posts.)

2. Once your entry is up, leave a comment/link here or e-mail your entry to gibbs_c@yahoo.com, with “Virgin Labfest 5” as subject. For Multiply users, leave a comment/link in my Multiply site.

3. The entries will be winnowed down to the Top Three. I'll ask two other people to help me read all the entries.

4. The contest runs June 23-July 5, or the entire run of the Labfest. Winners will be announced on or before July 10, through e-mail and an entry here.

The prizes

First prize: a copy of Preview Art, “a stunning, limited-edition collection of images from the Philippines' most provocative visual artists,” released to celebrate Preview Magazine's 150th issue. Retail prize: P1,000. Plus, an exclusive autographed copy of Sinta and Other Plays, by the legendary teacher and theater mentor Onofre Pagsanghan of Ateneo's Dulaang Sibol. Exclusive, because the book, which collects four of Mr. Pagsi's seminal plays and/or adaptations (Doon Po Sa Amin, Sinta, Adarna, Sa Kaharian ng Araw) is not available anywhere, but was published privately as a gift to Mr. Pagsi by some of his former students. Mr. Pagsi has donated autographed copies of the book for use as prizes here.

Second prize: A pair of white original Havaianas (size 37-38), with a blue Havaianas bag included in the package. If the pair isn't to your size or liking, win it for your mother, sister, brother, beau or fiancee. Plus, a copy of Sinta and Other Plays.

Third prize: A gift pack from Zen Zest consisting of bottles of room fragrance, linen spray and aromatherapy oil. Plus, a copy of Sinta and Other Plays.

Let me further explain why, among these prizes, I consider the Sinta anthology the most precious--as I hope you would, too. The four plays contained here are an initial summation of the trailblazing, at times historic but still underappreciated role that Mr. Pagsi holds in the development of Philippine theater. Filipino Librarian aka Von Totanes' succinct introduction mentions “the importance of his adaptation of Thornton Wilder's Our Town into Doon Po Sa Amin--one of the first in the Philippines--during a time when most, if not all, plays being produced were in English; the significance of Dulaang Sibol, a high school theater group, as one of the first theater groups to consistently produce plays in the vernacular; [and] the lasting effects that Mr. Pagsi and Dulaang Sibol had--not just on the Ateneo theater tradition, but also on the evolution of Filipino theater as it broke free from its dependence on English plays...”

It's a document, in short--a rare, valuable one, not for sale anywhere and signed by Mr. Pagsi himself.

And the point of all this? Here I go again: Do you remember the good shows you caught this year? Blog about them. The artists responsible for the diverting--perhaps even revelatory or life-altering--evenings you had at the theater would appreciate being remembered for their efforts. If, on the other hand, you didn't think a show was worth it, write about that, too. Honest criticism is as valuable as avid praise, and theater--the art form as well as the industry--would benefit as much from the aesthetic vision of its practitioners as from the candid feedback of its audience. The larger point, here and now, is to CARE that it exists at all.

I thank you, and world peace. Whew, preyssure!

See you at CCP!

Looking for Juan Banner Project (May 12-June 7, 2009)

The Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) had its opening of the Looking for Juan Outdoor Banner Project (The Original Works), an exhibition of artworks by some of the best contemporary Filipino artists, all providing visual answers to the question:

"What Does It Mean to Be Filipino?"
The exhibition opened with cocktails at 6:30pm on May 12, 2009 and was on view until June 7, 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in Manila.

About The Looking for Juan Outdoor Banner Project
For May and June, CANVAS celebrates Philippine art by staging two memorable public art exhibitions designed to engage visitors with its art-driven messaging about the Filipino identity.

The Looking for Juan Outdoor Banner Project will showcase some of the country’s best creative talents. Artists, graphic designers and photographers have been asked to express, in an image, their view of the Filipino and the idea of the Filipino identity. Their works will then be printed onto banners, which will be displayed in two highly accessible and pedestrian-friendly venues - - at the end of May at the new Philippine Pacific Rim Friendship Park in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan; and again in June at the University of the Philippines’ Academic Oval in Diliman.

The Project will create a new kind of experience that allows visitors to view and appreciate great art, and explore important social themes in a non-intimidating, relaxed and creative environment.
After closing, the banners will be recyled by two women’s communities in Antipolo and Laguna into tote bags, and sold as original works of functional art. Proceeds will be used to support Padyak - a UP Mountaineers-led movement to promote environmentalism and cycling as a healthy lifestyle, as well as CANVAS’ various programs to promote greater awareness and appreciation for Philippine art, culture and the environment.
The first forty to fifty original works (out of an expected 120 pieces) that were used for the banners were on display at the Cultural Center of the Philippines from May 12-June 7, 2009.
To date, participants in CANVAS’ Looking For Juan Outdoor Banner Exhibit include Buen Abrigo, Leonard Aguinaldo, Daniel Aligaen, Reynaldo Amido, Mark Arcamo, Ral Arogante, Anton Balao, Jeho Bitangcor, Plet Bolipata, Malyn Bonayog, Elmer Borlongan, Serj Bumatay, Michael Cacnio, Buen Calubayan, Jef Carnay, Buddy Ching, Marika Constantino, Convocar, Dansoy Coquilla, Jigger Cruz, Don Dalmacio, Kawayan de Guia, Kidlat de Guia, Ana De Leon, Crisanto De Leon, Maan De Loyola, Robert Deniega, Farley del Rosario, Anthony Fermin, Tina Fernandez, Karen Flores, Liza Flores, Emmanuel Garibay, Sajid Imao, Agang Maganda, Josue Mangrobang, Lotsu Manes, Roel Obemio, Jay Pacena II, Anthony Palo, Anthony Palomo, Marcial Pontillas, Jucar Raquepo, Omi Reyes, Iggy Rodriguez, Kirby Roxas, Mark Salvatus, Julios Samson, Aner Sebastian, Andoi Solon, Angelo Tabije, CJ Tanedo, Daniel Tayona, Juanito Torres, Wesley Valenzuela, Ian Valladarez, Migs Villanueva, Liv Vinluan, selected students from the UP College of Fine Arts, members of Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan, various creative writers, as well as a number of graphic design and advertising studios.

.................

Visa Requirements

It is important to find out before travelling whether you need a visa to enter your destination or transit country.

While visa restrictions are primarily based on citizenship, the holding of a residence permit may also be of importance. For example, if you are resident in any EU country that is part of the Schengen zone, you may travel visa-free throughout that zone.

To check whether you need a visa, you can search the IATA database which is publicly available on a number of websites. Click here to go to such a website.

The Henley Visa Restrictions Index

The Henley Visa Restrictions Index is a global ranking of countries according to travel freedom their citizens enjoy. Henley & Partners has analyzed the visa regulations of all the countries and territories in the world. It has created an index which ranks countries according to the visa-free access its citizens enjoy to other countries. This is the first time that a global ranking shows the international travel freedom of the citizens of the various countries as well as the international relations and status of individual countries relative to others.

In today's globalized world, visa restrictions play an important role in controlling the movement of foreign nationals across borders. Almost all countries now require visas from certain non-nationals who wish to enter their territory. Visa requirements are also an expression of the relationships between individual nations, and generally reflect the relations and status of a country within the international community of nations.

PETA Opens its 42nd Theater Season

PETA has been known and credited for creating issue-based performances that mirror and reflect the times – and for its fearless delivery of truth through a palette of theatrical forms. Now on its 42nd Theater Season, PETA continues to contribute to help bring about social awareness and change through its productions, performances and workshops, as it calls on its audiences to act and respond to the clarion call that hound the Philippine society. Using fresh, innovative and interesting techniques and approaches, PETA welcomes its new theater season as a renewed challenge to test and push the capacity of art in to inform, influence and inspire its audiences.

First on its list of productions is Nic Tiongson’s opus, Noli at Fili Dekada Dos Mil, an adaptation of Jose Rizal’s two most influential novels: El Filibusterismo and Noli Me Tangere. Reworked as a postmodern narrative, Noli at Fili Dekada Dos Mil is inspired by real events, characters and testimonials that arose during the landslide in the Quezon province. The story, which revolves around small town politics and the fight against corruption, also zooms into the problem of illegal logging and its corrupted relation with governance and religion.

Following Noli at Fili is Christine Bellen’s Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang. Now on it’s third year, Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang still remains to be one of PETA’s most-loved productions. Featuring stories from Severino Reyes’ folktales, Prinsipeng Mahaba ang Ilong, Ang Babaeng Tumalo sa Mahal na Hari at Prinsipeng Duwag – Mga Kuwento ni Lola Basyang presents different mythical stories about self-discovery and values formation.

In August, PETA celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child through its presentation of Ismail at Isabel (Ang Paghahanap ng mga Bagong Kuwentong Bayan), a moving story about two children, a Christian and Muslim, who once lived happily in their small village in Dilangawen, Mindanao. Blind to their differences, the two told and retold the folktales that narrate the likeness of Muslims and Christians – until the fearsome war reached their community and permanently broke their innocence.

In time for the 2010 elections, PETA creates a vaudeville style musical, Boto-boto-boboto-bonana-fanna-fo-foto-fee-fy-momoto-boto (BOTO Another Musical), that uses iconic characters of the Philippine electoral process: Lorrie Logarta, Chix Pedero, and popular terms such as ‘trapo’, ‘ispits’ (speech) and many others. The story, cast with 10 actors with interchanging roles and characters, also follows the electoral process, beginning with the voter’s registration and ending with the need for vigilance after elections.

The four productions, which officially begin on June 2009, also commence PETA’s renewed commitment to artistic excellence as it cradles a people’s culture through its use of theater that is distinctly Filipino.

Am I really a UP by heart? But my blood is Green.

I just joined Facebook 2 days ago. Yehey! I'm already Facebooked! I answered this particular quiz that gives you a result of a personality description of one out of only 4 Universities in the Philippines. What will the rest of the colleges and universities say about this type of quiz? Is it discriminating? hehe. Anyway, I'm happy with my result. I have studied in Ateneo, but my heart will forever belong to La Salle. Though I have not studied in UP, the descriptions below speak true about me - very true!

BTW, Monday is the usual day for the Arts. Most (if not all) art institutions are closed on a Monday. Newspapers on Mondays feature sections on Art, Design, Theater, Books/ Literature.

DLSU-Manila Classes Suspended Due to H1N1

DLSU announces closure of campus from June 4-14. Classes will resume on June 15 due to a confirmed case of H1N1 Influenza here in the University.

Please pass and be advised.

June 03, 2009

DOH Secretary Duque today lauded school authorities of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila at Taft Avenue for implementing a self-imposed temporary suspension of classes for 10 days beginning today after an international exchange student tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1).

This is in consonance with Response Level 3 of the Guidelines on A (H1N1) for schools which state that school authorities should suspend classes after detection of at least one confirmed case and there is no sustained community transmission.

The new confirmed case is a 21 year-old female foreign student who arrived in the country last May 12. According to DLSU officials, classes officially started on May 25 for the first trimester of this school year. The foreign student only reported very mild symptoms on May 29 which came to the attention of school authorities.

The student consulted a health facility on May 31where she was examined and tested for the presence of the virus through a throat swab. The specimen turned positive for A (H1N1) as confirmed today by RITM.

Duque said that the DOH is currently investigating and doing contact tracing to see if there were other exposed individuals related to this new case. Initial findings reveal that there is very limited exposure of other students to the confirmed case and that both DOH and school authorities can trace them.

Meanwhile, Duque already met the officials of DLSU to discuss the situation and come up with the next steps to prevent the spread of the virus to other students, faculty and other school staff.

Brother Armin Luistro FSC, President and Chancellor of the De La Salle University, expressed his full cooperation with the DOH on the ongoing containment measures and said that DLSU will immediately invoke the recommended measures contained in the Response Level System in Schools initially released by the DOH last May 31.

Starting tomorrow, June 4, classes will be suspended at the University and will last until June 14 in accordance with the guidelines set by the DOH.

The De La Salle University has already informed the students and faculty who were in the same class as the confirmed case to do self-monitoring of symptoms at home and to report immediately at designated hotlines if they become ill.

Meanwhile, Secretary Duque appealed to these students and school staff to temporarily avoid going to malls and other crowded areas during the period of class suspension.

As a precautionary measure, although they do not belong to the affected classes, all other students, faculty and personnel of DLSU should consider self-monitoring and avoiding crowded gatherings as well.

Secretary Duque thanked the officials of DLSU for keeping their school clinic open for any consultation during the period of class suspension. Students and faculty are therefore advised to report any symptom at this clinic which will in turn refer the cases to designated DOH referral facilities when necessary.

To date, the total number of confirmed cases of a (H1N1) in the country is now at 22.

Duque said that the three previously reported confirmed cases will be discharged today. To date, 14 of the 22 confirmed cases have already been sent home.

Since May 1, 2009, the DOH has monitored a total of 401 CUOs. Of these, 22 are positive A(H1N1) cases, 78 have pending laboratory results, and 301 are negative for A(H1N1) and have been discarded. There are 56 new Cases Under Observation (CUOs) today.

In their latest report, the World Health Organization reported 1,900 new cases and 16 deaths. There are now a total of 17,410 cases and 115 deaths from 62 reporting countries.

HK and KH

What's the significance of the letters HK and KH in the current Philippine news? Aside from HK that stands for Hong Kong, it can also mean Hayden Kho, while KH means Katrina Halili. With the ongoing trial of the very controversial sex scandal video of the two celebrities, we cannot help but follow (or at least sneak out on) the developments of their court trial issue.

Here are some of the other meanings of KH I got from wikipedia:

KH is a combination that may mean several things:
